Lenny Kravitz

One of my dreams came true on Tuesday nite...well, two dreams, really.  Chris and I attended a Lenny Kravitz concert at the historic Chicago Theatre.

Lenny is one of my "loves" and I have longed to see him perform!  I don't know how I missed out on the presale announcement for this concert, but one afternoon, just a couple of weeks ago, while driving to the gym, I heard it announced on the radio.  I was floored ~because he was coming to Chicago AND I have been dying to get inside the Chicago Theatre!!  I immediately grabbed my cellphone to call Chris.

The very next morning I got online to check for seats.  Ticketmaster only had "obstructed" views available.  UGH!!!

Then, I remembered that I had just sold my UFC tickets on StubHub.com ~~ SCORE!!!  So many seats available!!  We went with main floor seats toward the back.  However, I sort of wish we had spent a little extra money to get a wee bit closer ... especially since my camera sucks and the photos that Chris was able to take came out only so-so (you don't even want to see the ones I attempted)!!

Lenny did come out into the crowd and up the aisle along our row!!  I got a little peek of his head as he passed, along his way out the main door to head up to the mezzanine level.  Lenny LOVES his fans!!

The concert was awesome!  Lenny is high energy rock!  I am so happy to have seen him at this time in his career!  He performed both old hits and new tunes from his "Black & White America" album.  As with the "best" of us, Lenny has gotten even better with age!  He referenced having once been fine, 22 years ago when "Let Love Rule" came out ~~ and while that is very true, he is still just as fine & sexy in my eyes!

So, for February, I am going to "Let Love Rule"!
I hope you will join me.

I've censored the following, in protest of a bill that gives any corporation and the US government the power to censor the internet--a bill that could pass THIS WEEK. To see the uncensored text, and to stop internet censorship, visit:

Generosity

For 2012, I thought I would mention a character trait each month...Something for each of us to think about and, perhaps, decide if we are putting in our best effort.

It is up to each & every one of us to decide who we want to be and how we want to incorporate different characteristics into our daily lives.  For me, there are times I need to focus on something to be sure I am living the life I want for myself.

For January, I have picked:

Wikipedia defines generosity as: The habit of giving freely without expecting anything in return.

Generosity of spirit, of money, of time, of love...there are many ways to be generous (or charitable) to ourselves and others.

We can be generous in our attitude toward others.  This is sometimes an area where I struggle most.  When I am wronged, I am not one to easily let go of my hurt or anger.  (I am a Taurus, after all!!)  I am not a happy-go-lucky person, by nature, and I feel things pretty deeply at times.  Many times, I will decide I am just done with that person.  I move on and, usually, there isn't any going back.  I just move ahead without that person.  When I am on good terms with you, tho, my happiness can be contagious (or so I've been told)!!

We can be generous in our attitude toward ourselves.  Women need to practice self-love and acceptance most, in my opinion.  We are very driven by our outward appearance and can be very hard on ourselves for  weight and other surface issues.  I have suffered from acne as far back as I can remember.  I have tried so many things under the sun in my battle for clear skin, most to no avail.  I will be 40 this year and not only do I still battle acne, but also wrinkles and some hyperpigmentation ~~ fun times, yeah, right!  I do my best to clean, moisturize and treat my skin, but I have yet to truly win the war.  So, while I have not thrown in the towel, I will know that I am doing what I can and that I look pretty damn good these days!  I will continue to find new ways to manage my skin ~~ I won't stop looking for the right combination of products, diet and exercise that work best for my overall health, well-being and looks.  I will remind myself that I am the most beautiful ME!

Charity, being generous with our money, is something we have done for years.  It began years (& years) ago when I worked at WalMart, where we had the Salvation Army Angel Trees.  I would take one angel each year, sometimes two as it got closer to the deadline.  What fun to shop for these unknown kids who may have little to nothing, if not for the generosity of others ~ and to see the request for hats & gloves is a bit heartbreaking.  Chris and I did Angel Tree gifts for several years ~~ you should have seen Chris's wrapping for his gifts!  So creative!!  We began to incorporate monetary donations to various organizations over the years; ones that hold special meaning for us, like hospice.  At Halloween, I like to have a UNICEF collection box on my desk at work.  For the past few years, our dentist has collected unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots and we have given (full disclosure: with the bonus that he gives us a small credit on our accounts).  Last year, we made a charitable donation to one organization each quarter and I plan to do the same this year.  Do what you can without causing undue financial hardship.  I never advocate going into debt.

"Generosity consists not the sum given, but the manner in which it was bestowed."  (Author unknown)

And if you can't find any leeway in your finances, the generosity of your time can be just as valuable.  One thing I wanted to do last year was volunteer at a "soup kitchen" and I failed to do so.  I have it on my 2012 To Do List.  I know there is a local church where I live that offers such a service every Saturday.  I must find them and see how I can help, at least once.  If you know of an elderly or ill person who might need some assistance, then you might think to reach out.  It could simply be taking out the trash every week for your widowed neighbor.  How about donating all of those magazines and/or books you have piled up in the corner waiting to be put out for recycling?  Take them to a domestic violence shelter.

Being generous with our love......not always easy.  Or is it just me?  The whole love everyone, love your enemies, etc. etc. just isn't for me.  However, I will do better showing my loved ones, family & friends, that I love and appreciate them.  At the end of last year, I was watching Joel Osteen one Sunday morning and he was talking about those people in our lives who are our parachutes and that we need to express to them our love and gratitude.  I immediately sat down to write small notes to my mom and sisters (later to my brother) to let them know that, although there have been struggles and we live so far apart, I love each of them, I cherish the part they each have in my life, I am proud of them and to also encourage them to be whatever they want to be.  When Chris returned home from his run, I thanked him for being my parachute (he is also my safety net)!!!

Generosity can be both paying it forward and paying it back.  It is always rewarding to be on either end, so just think of that when you are setting your intentions for being generous this new year.

2011 Goals ~~ How Did I Do??

I looked back at my blog post at the end of 2010 for my 2011 To Do List.

Here are the things I maintained:
-Tweaking our diet
-Switching up my workout
-Vacations
-New recipes
-Building our savings
-Operation: Sell This House

Here are the few things I didn't reach:
-Monthly massages
-Volunteering
-Submitting our tees & slogans

And one area in which I want to get better:
-Creativity

Seems I did pretty well, if I do say so myself!  And without really referring back to my blog post!

Now, to come up with my 2012 list!!  All of the "goals" I met in 2011 will continue into 2012.  I would like to volunteer, at least, once in the new year.  And I will try to always find ways to be creative!

Wishing everyone a magnificent and magical 2012!!

(If the Mayans are right, this could be our last, ya know?!)

Holiday Decor 2011

We went pretty minimalist in our Christmas decorating this year...

Our liquor shelf gussied up for the holidays!  See Chris's "major award"?

One of Chris's nutcrackers (he has a small collection) and my "new" sleigh for holding our Christmas cards.

Our front porch.  I ADORE our old sled!!!

I decorate our flower boxes with fake evergreens and ornaments.  This year, I incorporated some of the leftover real greenery.

Luna's favorite spot...(almost) Santa's lap!  Yep, she made the Nice List!!!

Merry Weekend

It is the beginning of the Christmas weekend and I have made my way to our local Barnes & Noble to take advantage of the free wifi.  I could not believe the checkout line when I was walking in!  YIKES!  I do have a 25% off coupon & there is a book I was interested in, but don't think there is anything I MUST have that would make me get in that queue!!!

I am enjoying a 4-day weekend!  WooHoo!  I started my break with a kickboxing workout and a much-needed haircut!  Both refreshing!!!

It doesn't "feel" like Christmas for me.  I think because we don't do the whole gift-giving bonanza, plus we don't have any snow.  It is cool & sunny ~ perfect winter weather as far as I'm concerned.  Yet, I wouldn't mind a dusting of the white powdery stuff for Christmas morning!

We are going to the Dunes tomorrow morning for a guided walk at 10.  Don't know what to expect, but it will be fun to be out at Lake Michgan, drinking hot cocoa while strolling in the fresh air.

I wonder, as I watch so many people out & about, are they shopping for others, themselves, perhaps a little of both?  It's a great time to shop for oneself!  I mean, there are some awesome deals, especially when you combine sales with coupons!  Come on, who among us doesn't shop for ourselves during the holidays???

Myself, I made a trip to Kohl's yesterday for the sole purpose of looking at a pink tulle skirt for my big 40th birthday bash next year (it's 80's themed).  It was on sale and I had a 15% off coupon, so what better time to give it a look, right?  I had to ask a salesperson if there were any left b/c I wasn't able to locate one on my own.  She made a bee-line for where they should be and behind a couple misplaced items, there was one ~ size medium, which I thought would work.  Just to save myself a trip, tho, I headed to the fitting room to give it a whirl.  And it fit!!!!  So, I now have one item toward my birthday outfit!  It feels good to know now how I want to look!  (My party is May 19th, leaving me plenty of time...but you know how you just know something is right, this skirt fits that bill!)

For the most part, however, we have avoided the shopping meccas.  We don't desire to be in the hullabaloo of the traffic, parking, money-wasting madness!  If I hadn't needed to be out this way for my haircut, I would be at home ~~ away from the traffic nightmare that the day before the day before Christmas is today.

So, the checkout line doesn't seem to have ended ... and that includes the one at the Cafe.  Barnes & Noble might have a record-setting sales day b/c it seems like many have waited to spend their hard-earned dollars at the almost last minute.  I wonder:  did many wait until today b/c it is a payday for them??  Christmas on a Sunday is probably good for retail ~~ leaves Saturday, a weekend day when many are off anyway, for Christmas Eve...the ultimate last minute shopping day!

I leave with a photo of our boy, who we miss everyday and who loved when the Christmas decorations were out so he had new places to explore!

Caesar, Christmas 2008 ~~ He loved "hiding" in those trees; hanging with Frosty!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!

Merry Christmas to the Mojicas!

We are attending our first ever UFC live event!!!  On January 28, 2012, at the United Center in Chicago, we get to see Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping .... AND EDDIE WINELAND!  Eddie is the real reason behind going to this particular event.  We know him from our gym, LA Boxing Merrillville, and look forward to cheering for him in person.  It is going to be an incredible experience!!!

I cannot wait!!!

And the owners of Fight Chix, Elisabeth & Jacob Nuesser, will be there, too.  Hoping to meet one or both of them!  I will, of course, be wearing one of my (three!!) Fight Chix tees!
Along with my pink brass knuckles necklace!
Yep ~ that's me.  Modeling a FC tee, so I could get a free one!!

Got us Lower Level, Section 111, Row 18, Seats 7 & 8!!  That is the level just behind the floor seats!  WooHoo!  Not nose-bleed section, like when we went to see the Chicago Blackhawks.

Unfortunate update:  Eddie Wineland has dropped out of his fight!  Ankle injury.  I am disappointed, to say the least, but we intend to have a great time!  Looking forward to meeting the Fight Chix owners and attending the first UFC fight on FOX!!!
